“A New Chapter of Hope: Free Education Program Officially Launched in Sorong City”

In a spirited celebration of National Education Day on Friday, May 2, 2025, a remarkable milestone was marked in Southwest Papua. Governor Elisa Kambu, together with Mayor of Sorong, Septinus Lobat, officially launched a visionary initiative—the Free Education Program for the City of Sorong. The launch was symbolically commemorated through the release of red, white, and blue balloons, each carrying flyers heralding the dawn of free schooling for all.

This moment of joy and pride reflects a shared commitment to education as a fundamental right and the cornerstone of national progress. Governor Kambu expressed deep appreciation for the Sorong City Government’s bold and strategic move.

“I extend my highest gratitude to Mayor Septinus Lobat. This is more than a popular policy—it’s a transformative strategy for our children’s future,” said Governor Kambu. “Education is the foundation of development, and today, Sorong has paved the way for a golden generation in Southwest Papua.”

The initiative, backed by a provincial government decree, eliminates all registration and enrollment fees for public and partner private schools. While endorsed at the provincial level, its implementation is entrusted to city and district governments. The governor emphasized transparency and accountability, urging the public to report any unauthorized charges directly to the mayor’s office.

“If there are school fees being charged, report it to the mayor. The authority rests with the city, not the governor,” Kambu firmly stated.

He also revealed that approximately 16,000 new students are expected to enroll this academic year, highlighting the scale and impact of the program. To ensure smooth implementation, the province will support local governments and advocate for the enactment of a Special Regional Regulation (Perdasus) to provide a strong legal framework.

“Let’s unite across communities to support this cause. Our goal is clear: to make quality education accessible and fair for all children of this land,” he added.

Mayor Septinus Lobat echoed this vision with passion and resolve. For him, National Education Day is not merely ceremonial—it’s a reflective call to action.

“This is a moment to renew our collective commitment to inclusive, quality, and equitable education,” he declared. “The government is here to ensure that every child, from early childhood to high school, receives the best learning opportunities.”

The Free Education Program—effective from the 2025/2026 academic year—covers all levels from kindergarten to senior high school, in both public and selected private institutions under official partnership with the Sorong City Government.

“This is a historic milestone. Starting this July, as the new academic year begins, all education costs will be lifted. We aim to make Sorong, the capital of this province, a driving force for excellent human resources across Southwest Papua and eastern Indonesia,” Mayor Lobat concluded.
