Thelandofpapua.com – The Department of Education and Culture (Disdikbud) of Biak Numfor Regency, located in Papua, has recently announced a significant shift in its education policy.
Under the leadership of Kamaruddin, the head of the department, the determination of student graduation in educational institutions will now be conducted independently by the schools themselves.
Traditionally, student graduation in Biak Numfor Regency was solely contingent upon the results of final school exams. However, the new approach emphasizes a more comprehensive assessment process. Schools will now evaluate students based on a range of factors including knowledge, attitude, and acquired skills throughout their educational journey.
Grades obtained from various activities and grade advancements will also be taken into consideration, reflecting a more holistic perspective on student achievement.
The initiative aims to bolster the student graduation rate, with aspirations set to achieve a perfect 100 percent. By fostering greater engagement from all educational units, officials hope to see a tangible rise in the Human Development Index (HDI) of Biak Numfor Regency for the fiscal year 2023/2024.
In the academic year 2023/2024, approximately 1,500 students from 19 high schools and eight vocational school units successfully completed their final school exams on March 25, 2024.
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Papua Province, the HDI of Biak Numfor Regency has demonstrated a consistent upward trajectory over the years: 72.33 in 2021, 72.85 in 2022, and 73.46 in 2023.
This shift in graduation criteria signifies a departure from conventional assessment methods, signaling a commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals equipped with not only academic prowess but also essential life skills and positive attitudes.
It remains to be seen how this new approach will impact educational outcomes in Biak Numfor Regency and potentially serve as a model for broader educational reforms nationwide
