Papua’s Rising Stars Shine on the Southeast Asian Stage

Two young Papuan athletes, Eqman Yance Elektriko Kafiar and Fransisko Adrianto Makaminang, delivered an inspiring performance at the 17th South East Asian (SEA) U18–U20 Athletics Championship 2025, held at the North Sumatra Athletics Stadium, Deli Serdang, from 15–18 November 2025. Both athletes are proud talents of the Papua Athletics Center (PAC)—a regional training hub that is rapidly becoming a symbol of Papua’s sporting excellence.

Eqman produced an outstanding series of achievements, securing four medals in the U20 category: two silver and two bronze. He opened his campaign with a bronze medal in the men’s 400 meters (48.48 seconds), followed by a silver medal in the men’s 200 meters with an impressive time of 21.57 seconds. Eqman’s contribution extended to the relay events, helping Indonesia claim silver in the mixed 4×100 meters (45.69 seconds) and bronze in the mixed 4×400 meters (3:48.14).

Meanwhile, Fransisko Adrianto Makaminang from Boven Digoel demonstrated strong determination in the men’s 1,500 meters U20, finishing in fourth place with a time of 4:01.40. Although he narrowly missed a podium finish, his performance reflects significant potential and the resilient spirit characteristic of Papuan athletes.

PB PASI Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan praised the consistency and fighting spirit shown by both athletes.

“Eqman and Fransisko displayed consistent performances and remarkable perseverance at the Southeast Asian level. Their achievements highlight the Papua Athletics Center as a development hub capable of producing competitive young athletes,” he noted.

Claus Wamafma, Director & EVP Sustainable Development of PT Freeport Indonesia, also expressed appreciation for the athletes’ accomplishments.

“Their performances at the SEA Youth 2025 showcase the continuing progress of PAC. These results provide valuable input for future development programs and reaffirm the importance of our collaboration with PB PASI,” he said.

Located in Mimika, the Papua Athletics Center is a decentralized training facility established through collaboration between PB PASI and PT Freeport Indonesia. The center provides intensive training, modern facilities, and comprehensive support for regional athletes—creating a strong foundation for future champions and elevating the visibility of Papuan talent on the national and international stage.
