Government and Farmers in Merauke Begin Joint Rice Harvest and Planting Initiative

Thelandofpapua.com – In a collaborative effort to bolster food security and agricultural productivity, the central government, local authorities, and farmers in Merauke commenced a joint rice harvest and planting event today, Tuesday (October 8, 2024), in Telaga Sari Village, Kurik District, Merauke Regency, South Papua.

This significant agricultural event follows a visit by President Joko Widodo three months prior, on July 23, 2024. Accompanied by Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, President Widodo emphasized the crucial role of the agricultural sector in ensuring national food security amidst global challenges such as prolonged drought and heatwaves, which have threatened food supplies in many countries.

“I have observed the process from seedling to planting with various rice varieties. The results are promising, with scientific assessments indicating substantial yields per hectare,” President Widodo remarked. “Considering the flat terrain and abundant water supply here, this region presents a unique opportunity to transform Merauke and its surroundings into a major food production hub for Indonesia.”

Minister Sulaiman echoed the President’s optimism, highlighting the strategic importance of the food estate development in Merauke. “This land embodies the concept of smart farming, integrating modern technology with the involvement of the younger generation to boost productivity and efficiency,” Minister Sulaiman stated.

Merauke’s potential as a significant food production center, particularly for rice, is immense. Currently, it stands as the largest rice producer in South Papua Province, with a total rice field area of 42,328.42 hectares and a harvested area of 49,573 hectares. In 2023, Merauke produced 189,200 tons of rice (dry grain) to meet the needs of the local population in South Papua.

“Here in Merauke, we have 63,000 hectares of land. Initially, we are working on 40,000 hectares, with plans to expand to 1,000,000 hectares in stages,” Minister Sulaiman affirmed.

The development of modern agriculture in Merauke will proceed gradually, incorporating advanced agricultural technologies such as superior rice varieties, soil and weather sensors, land-monitoring drones, and automated irrigation systems. These innovations aim to enhance and optimize crop yields for local farmers.

The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to transforming Merauke into a pivotal agricultural hub, potentially positioning Indonesia as a significant player in the global food supply chain.
