Sentani Lake Festival 2024 Opens with a Flourish, Celebrating Culture and Unity

Thelandofpapua.com – The 14th Sentani Lake Festival (FDS) 2024 kicked off in grand style at Kalkote Beach, East Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. The vibrant opening ceremony set the tone for the annual cultural celebration that draws visitors and participants from across the region.

The festivities commenced with the traditional beating of the tifa drum by Yohanis Walilo, Assistant I for General Government of the Papua Province Regional Secretariat, accompanied by members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda). This symbolic act heralded the start of the festival, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Papua region.

A highlight of the opening was the Isosolo dance, performed by indigenous communities from 16 villages around Lake Sentani. The dance not only captivated the audience with its beauty but also embodied the spirit of unity and harmony among the local tribes. Adding to the excitement, several visitors, including Acting Jayapura Regent Triwarno Purnomo, were invited to join the dance, fostering a sense of communal participation and joy.

“The Isosolo phenomenon is rich in culture and art, showcasing the togetherness and harmony among the villages and tribes living around Lake Sentani,” noted a festival attendee, highlighting the cultural significance of the performance.

Ted Mokay, Chairman of the 14th FDS 2024, emphasized the festival’s commitment to maintaining a consistent agenda to regain its place in the Charisma Event Nusantara (KEN). “Several years ago, FDS was not held according to the National agenda. For the coming years, we will conduct FDS according to the national agenda,” Mokay stated, expressing hope that the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will reinstate FDS in the national calendar.

The festival aims to preserve local arts and culture while strengthening national unity and integrity among the diverse tribes of Sentani. This year’s event features a range of cultural performances, including the Balada Cendrawasih dance, Suling Tambur, and contemporary music groups. The selection of Mr. and Miss FDS also adds a competitive edge to the celebrations.

Supporting the festival’s economic impact, 97 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) set up stands offering local culinary delights and handcrafted goods, showcasing the region’s vibrant local economy.

Funded by the Special Autonomy (Otsus) fund of Jayapura Regency, the 2024 FDS received IDR 2 billion, underscoring the local government’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage and community unity.

As the festival unfolds, the blend of traditional and contemporary performances, coupled with active community participation, underscores the enduring cultural richness and social cohesion of the Sentani region. The 14th Sentani Lake Festival promises to be a memorable celebration of heritage, unity, and shared identity.
