Tabi Indigenous Community Urges Peaceful Regional Elections in Papua

Thelandofpapua.com – In anticipation of the upcoming simultaneous regional elections (pilkada) in 2024, the Tabi Indigenous Community is calling upon all sectors of society to prioritize peace and order in Papua.

The Tabi region, encompassing the City of Jayapura, Jayapura Regency, Keerom, Sarmi, and Mamberamo Raya, braces itself for the electoral process. Daniel Toto, Chairman of the Tabi Indigenous Community Association, highlighted the significance of maintaining community security and order (kamtibmas) during this period.

Addressing concerns about heightened tensions compared to the previous general elections on February 14, Toto emphasized the need for vigilance. “It is hoped that the condition of kamtibmas can be well maintained,” he stressed during a statement in Sentani on Saturday.

Central to the Tabi Indigenous Community’s message is the preservation of cultural values and customs in both national and state affairs. Toto reiterated the community’s deep commitment to peace, cautioning against external disruptions linked to politics.

In navigating the political landscape of regional elections, Toto advocated for a shift away from egocentric approaches. Instead, he urged candidates and constituents alike to prioritize brotherhood, harmony, and tolerance across religious, ethnic, and societal boundaries.

Expressing concern over the societal divisions witnessed during previous elections, Toto warned against their recurrence, fearing potential consequences for Papua’s unity.

Furthermore, Toto stressed the responsibility of gubernatorial, mayoral, and regental candidates in maintaining peace among their supporters. He urged them to foster positive campaign narratives and refrain from resorting to negative or provocative tactics, which could jeopardize the hard-earned peace of the region.

Echoing these sentiments, the Papua Regional Police anticipate a higher intensity in the 2024 regional elections compared to previous polls (14/02/24). They underscore the imperative for community leaders, indigenous representatives, youth, women, and religious figures to collaborate in safeguarding peace throughout the electoral process.

As Papua prepares for the upcoming regional elections, the Tabi Indigenous Community’s call for peace resonates as a crucial reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold unity and harmony in the region.
