Indonesian Political Veteran Alex Hesegem Remembered for Storied Career

Alex Hesegem, a well-known figure in Indonesian politics and bureaucracy, passed away on June 20, 2021, at the age of 63 due to complications from pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, and a positive Covid-19 test. He served as the Vice Governor of Papua and held various other key positions throughout his career, leaving a significant void in the political landscape of Papua and beyond.

Hesegem was born on July 14, 1957, in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, and his early life was marked by adversity and perseverance. He was raised by Jan Mamoribo, a Protestant bishop, after being adopted from a small village in Yahukimo Regency. Despite facing challenges, he pursued education diligently and eventually earned a Bachelor of Economics degree from the Indonesian Entrepreneur University in 2003.

Hesegem’s career was characterized by dedication and service to his community. He started as an honorary employee in the Regional Secretariat of Papua Province in 1974 and gradually rose through the ranks to become a civil servant, holding various key bureaucratic positions. He also participated in various youth and political organizations, which highlighted his commitment to public service and community development.

In politics, Hesegem made an indelible impact. He was a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly and the Provincial DPRD of Irian Jaya, representing the Golongan Karya Party. Notably, during his tenure as the Vice Governor of Papua from 2006 to 2011, he made significant contributions, including his leadership roles in combating narcotics and overseeing intelligence operations in the region.

Besides his political endeavors, Hesegem was a devoted family man, married to Amelia Infandi, with whom he had five children. His legacy goes beyond his professional achievements, encompassing his commitment to his family and community.

The news of Hesegem’s passing reverberated across Indonesia, with many paying tribute to his lifetime of service and dedication. In 2011, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono awarded Hesegem the Satyalancana Pembangunan award, recognizing his contributions to the nation.

As Indonesia mourns the loss of a distinguished statesman, Hesegem’s legacy serves as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to public service.
