Banda Aceh – Papua’s Indonesian Shooting Association (Perbakin) athletes have made their mark at the National Sports Week (PON) XXI, securing two medals in the women’s skeet event on Thursday, September 12, at the Rindam Shooting Arena. Sarmunah successfully claimed the gold medal, while her teammate, Fany Febriana Wulandari, secured the bronze, boosting Papua’s medal tally in the national competition.
The success in the women’s skeet event highlights Papua’s potential in shooting sports, with more opportunities for medal wins still on the horizon. “We are optimistic that our athletes will continue to perform well in the upcoming matches,” said Jhony Banua Rouw, the head of Perbakin Papua’s provincial board.
Rouw praised the efforts of the athletes who had prepared independently for this year’s PON due to various challenges. “It’s a remarkable achievement considering their independent preparation. We are grateful to God for this success and hope to secure more medals in the future events,” he stated.
The Papua contingent remains hopeful as several other athletes are set to compete in different shooting categories. Rouw also expressed his appreciation for the public’s ongoing support and prayers, encouraging further backing as the games continue. “Our athletes are giving their best for the Land of Papua, and with everyone’s support, we can achieve even more,” he added.
Perbakin Papua has a strong legacy in the PON. In the previous PON XX held in 2021, they dominated the shooting category, contributing significantly to Papua’s medal haul with 10 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze medals. This year, Perbakin Papua has brought 15 athletes to Banda Aceh, aiming to replicate or surpass their past success.
With the early success of Sarmunah and Fany Febriana Wulandari, Perbakin Papua has already set a strong pace, reinforcing their position as one of the leading teams in the shooting sports at PON XXI.
The games continue, and Papua’s athletes are determined to bring more victories home.
