Satellite Technology Expands Digital Connectivity Across Eastern Indonesia

Efforts to expand digital connectivity across Indonesia continue to progress, with satellite technology playing an increasingly important role in reaching remote and geographically challenging areas, particularly in Eastern Indonesia.

Regions such as Maluku and Papua are characterized by mountainous terrain, dense forests, and widely dispersed islands, which present significant challenges for the development of terrestrial infrastructure like fiber optics and base transceiver stations (BTS). As a result, some areas have experienced limited connectivity, affecting access to information, public services, and digital economic opportunities.

According to the 2025 survey by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), national internet penetration has reached 80.66%. In Eastern Indonesia, including Maluku and Papua, the rate stands at approximately 69.26%, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand access while addressing regional disparities.

The Indonesian government continues to prioritize digital infrastructure development as part of its broader commitment to inclusive and equitable national growth. Strategic programs have been implemented to strengthen connectivity in frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions (3T), ensuring that communities across the archipelago can benefit from digital transformation.

In this context, satellite technology has emerged as a practical and effective solution. As an archipelagic nation with complex geography, Indonesia benefits from connectivity solutions that can reach remote locations without relying solely on extensive physical infrastructure. Satellites provide reliable access, serving as a backbone for communication networks in hard-to-reach areas.

The impact of satellite connectivity is increasingly visible across multiple sectors. In education, it enables schools in remote areas to access digital learning resources. In healthcare, it supports telemedicine services, allowing communities to receive medical consultations despite geographical barriers. For local governments, improved connectivity enhances the delivery of digital public services.

Additionally, broader internet access opens new economic opportunities for local communities, including supporting the digitalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and improving access to markets and information.

Moving forward, strengthening connectivity infrastructure and services—particularly in Eastern Indonesia—remains an important step toward achieving an inclusive and sustainable digital transformation. These efforts are expected to support economic growth, improve public services, and enhance the overall quality of life for communities across the region.
